Beaches in Devon - Coastal Escapes for Every Kind of Explorer
From hidden coves to sweeping sands, Devon’s coastline is packed with places to unwind, explore or dive into adventure. Whether you’re after a peaceful cliff-top walk, a refreshing sea swim or a full day of beachside fun, there’s a stretch of coast waiting for you.

South Devon Coast Highlights
Wembury is the closest beach to us, offering dramatic views, gentle walks along the cliffs and a handy National Trust café right by the slipway. It’s a great spot for a relaxed afternoon or a quick dip.
Bigbury-on-Sea is a firm favourite. The iconic Sea Tractor ferries visitors across to Burgh Island, home to the famous Art Deco hotel and the historic Pilchard Inn. There’s also a surf school near the car park offering lessons and board hire, plus a café and shop selling soft, cosy hoodies perfect for post-swim lounging.
Just around the corner is Bantham, known for its laid-back vibe and the Bantham Gastro Bus, which serves up gourmet bites throughout the season. For a full-day adventure, paddle from Aveton Gifford down the estuary to Bantham, spend the day on the beach, then ride the tide back – it’s a stunning route for paddle boarders and strong swimmers.
North Cornwall Coast Adventures
If you’re heading north, Bude is a top pick. It’s all about the sea swimming here, with a large tidal pool and scenic coastal walks in both directions. For a bracing stomp followed by a dip, park near the sea pool – it’s the closest spot for warming up quickly after a chilly swim. Afterwards, grab a coffee or bite to eat at one of the town’s many cafés.
Daymer Bay and Rock are also worth the drive. We’re a little sentimental about this stretch – we got married in Port Isaac and had our photos taken on the beach – but it’s genuinely beautiful. Just across the estuary is Padstow, where Padstow Sealife Safaris offer unforgettable boat trips. Seals are a regular sight, and if you’re lucky, you might spot puffins or porpoises too. They provide waterproofs for the spray, so you can enjoy the views in comfort.

South East Coast Gems
Whitsand Bay and Rame Head offer a dramatic coastline with a vast three-mile beach below. Dining options here are varied and excellent – from The View Restaurant to Maker Heights Canteen, run by a former River Cottage chef, and The Bay Bar in Cawsand. The nearby Mount Edgcumbe Estate backs onto the peninsula and offers walking trails and even Segway tours through its parklands.
Devon Beach Holiday Ideas
Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer holiday in Devon by the beach, there’s no shortage of seaside spots to explore. From family-friendly sands to wild swimming coves and surf-ready shores, Devon’s beaches offer something for everyone.
