Best Walks Devon - Where to Begin
Dartmoor National Park, designated in 1951, is one of the UK’s most accessible wilderness areas. Despite its wild reputation, it’s just a short drive from many of Devon’s market towns and coastal villages. The moor is rich in history, wildlife and walking routes that suit all levels.
Here are some of our favourite places to start your Dartmoor adventure:
- Tavistock – A historic stannary town with a vibrant pannier market, independent shops and a thriving food scene. It’s a great base for exploring western Dartmoor.
- Okehampton – Known as the gateway to the north moor, it offers access to the military ring road, perfect for scenic drives and high moorland walks.
- Ashburton – Nestled on the eastern edge, this charming town is full of character, with cosy pubs and cafés to refuel after a walk.
- Princetown – Right in the heart of Dartmoor, this village is steeped in history. Visit the High Moorland Visitor Centre for walking maps and local insights.
- Widecombe-in-the-Moor – Famous for its fair and thatched cottages, this picturesque village is ideal for relaxed strolls and cream teas.
- Postbridge – Home to the iconic medieval clapper bridge, it’s a great spot to begin a walk into the central moor.
- Powder Mills Pottery – Explore the remnants of Dartmoor’s industrial past, then enjoy a cream tea in the pottery café.
- Chagford – A lively village with boutique shops and excellent eateries, surrounded by scenic walking routes.
Walks on Dartmoor with Dogs
Dartmoor is a paradise for four-legged adventurers. Many of the circular walks on Dartmoor are dog-friendly, with open spaces to roam and rivers to splash in. Just be mindful of livestock and wildlife, especially during lambing season.

Dartmoor Walking Routes with a Pub
