Watersports in Devon
Devon Watersports - Dive into Nature’s Playground
Devon is a haven for water lovers, offering everything from serene wild swimming spots to exhilarating paddle boarding and kayaking adventures. Whether you’re drawn to the salty embrace of the sea or the crisp clarity of moorland pools, there’s something here for every kind of aquatic explorer.

Wild Swimming - Embrace the Chill
We’re passionate about wild swimming – not just in summer, but all year round. There’s something deeply invigorating about plunging into cold water, especially when it’s surrounded by Devon’s breathtaking landscapes. The sea has its own magic, with salt water leaving your skin tingling and refreshed. But for a real cold-water thrill, Dartmoor’s moorland pools offer temperatures that dip far below the ocean’s, especially in winter.
One of our top spots is Crazy Well Pool, tucked behind Burrator Reservoir. It’s perfect for a proper swim – not just a quick dip – and even the dog loves it. If you’re after a gentler experience, Cadover Bridge is ideal for dipping along the river. Combine it with a scenic circular walk through the historic Plym Valley mine works, and you’ve got a perfect day out. Don’t miss the Willy’s Ice Cream van often parked nearby, or warm up afterwards with a hearty meal at the Royal Oak Inn in Meavy.

Paddle Boarding & Kayaking
If you’re bringing your own paddle board or kayak, you’re in luck. Just a short 5-minute drive takes you to Lopwell Dam, a stunning nature reserve on the upper River Tavy. It’s tidal, so timing is key, but the views and wildlife make it well worth the effort.
For those looking to learn or improve their skills, Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre offers tailored coaching sessions (1:1 or 1:2) in both paddle boarding and sea kayaking in Devon. It’s a great way to build confidence and explore the coastline from a new perspective.
